Art UK: Print-on-Demand Configurator

Simplifying complex customisation for a seamless buying journey

Art UK's digital platform provides access to thousands of artworks from UK collections, available as custom prints. Unlike standard ecommerce, their "Print on Demand" model requires users to make multiple configuration decisions: size, finish, framing, and matting. All before checkout. The existing mobile experience was overwhelming. Users dropped off during the selection process. As UI Lead, I redesigned the complete configuration journey with a mobile-first approach. The challenge was creating a logical, step-by-step flow. One that guided users through dozens of potential combinations without creating decision fatigue or visual clutter. I designed a system that revealed options contextually. Users understood their choices at each step. The interface balanced visual previews (critical for art purchases) with clear pricing updates and accessible controls optimised for touch interaction.

Complexity that feels effortless

The redesigned configurator transformed a technically complex process into an intuitive buying experience. Some might even call it enjoyable. By prioritising mobile interaction patterns I removed friction from what had been a barrier to conversion. Users can now confidently select custom frame options, preview their choices in context, and complete purchases without confusion. Even on small screens. The components I created for this configurator now serves as the foundation for Art UK's broader product customisation features. Key Outcomes: • Mobile-first progressive disclosure system • Intuitive step-by-step configuration flow • Real-time visual previews for all customisation options • Clear pricing transparency throughout • Accessible touch-optimised controls • Reduced drop-off during configuration
