JW3: Event Discovery & Information Architecture
Making hundreds of events discoverable without overwhelming users
JW3 is London's Jewish community centre. It manages an incredibly diverse programme. Cinema screenings and comedy shows. Educational courses, kids' activities, and cultural events. With hundreds of monthly events across multiple categories, their "What's On" system risked overwhelming visitors rather than helping them discover relevant activities. As UI Lead, I led the interface design for a complete reimagining of their event discovery experience. The core challenge was creating navigation and filtering that made sense of this density without forcing users to work too hard. We needed a system flexible enough to handle film festivals, yoga classes, lectures, and children's programming. All with different booking requirements and audience needs. I designed a layered information architecture that allowed users to explore broadly or filter precisely. To help visitors navigate the diversity of events, I created a custom icon set that visually categorised each event type. This made browsing and filtering more intuitive, especially on mobile where screen space was limited. The UI prioritised visual hierarchy and progressive disclosure. First-time visitors could orient themselves quickly while regular members could navigate efficiently.
Clarity from complexity
The redesigned event discovery transformed JW3's digital platform from a dense calendar into an intuitive browsing experience. Users can now explore the full breadth of programming without feeling lost. The custom icon set I designed provides instant visual recognition of event types. Cinema, comedy, education, family activities. Each category is immediately identifiable. Targeted filtering helps them find exactly what they're looking for. The mobile-first approach proved critical. Most JW3 visitors check the site from their phones while planning their week or deciding what to do that evening. By prioritising mobile navigation patterns and touch-friendly controls, I created an experience that works beautifully for quick browsing and detailed planning alike. Key Outcomes: • Custom icon set for visual event categorisation • Intuitive multi-level filtering for hundreds of events • Mobile-first browsing and booking experience • Flexible information architecture across diverse categories • Clear visual hierarchy preventing information overload • Improved event discoverability for both new and returning visitors
